How this is worked out

We show only prices Irish firms list on their own sites for a pergola of that type and size, read on 3 November 2026. Kits are delivered for you or a fitter to put up; the fitted price is Superior Pergola Ireland's published starting price. A base, fixings into the wall, electrics for lights or motors, and side screens are extra. It's a guide, never a quote.

With a roof

A roof for Irish weather

Most Irish buyers want a roof. An open timber pergola gives shade and a frame for climbers; a louvred roof keeps the rain off and opens for sun. Some kits are shower resistant rather than fully watertight, so read the maker's words: Mid Ulster describes the Como's louvred roof as shower resistant.

Side screens turn a pergola into a sheltered room for half the year. Pergolas with a roof covers the choices.

A photo that works

  • Daylight, from the back door or an upstairs window.
  • The spot for the pergola in the middle of the shot.
  • Include the house wall if it's going against it.
  • Measure the space too: the company will ask.

Irish gardens

Pergolas in numbers

41%of Irish households live in a detached house (CSO Census 2022)
306 mmof rain from May to September in Dublin city, against 591 mm at Kenmare (Met Éireann)
30 m²all sheds, garages and garden structures together, the Class 3 limit since 27 July 2026, up from 25 m² (S.I. 338 of 2026)
25 m²of private garden that has to be left behind or beside the house (S.I. 338 of 2026)

A pergola goes where the garden gets the evening sun, close enough to the back door to be used. Against the house it uses the wall as one side; freestanding, it can sit at the end of the garden. Either way it needs a level base: an existing patio, or new pads for the posts.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does a pergola cost in Ireland?

Superior Pergola Ireland lists made-to-measure aluminium pergolas, installed, from €2,500. As kits, a 2.4 m timber pergola is €427.95 (Mid Ulster), a 3 m × 3 m aluminium louvred one €1,885.99 to €2,569.95, and a motorised 3 m × 4 m one €3,395 to €7,420 (Royale Stones). See the cost guide.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola?

Usually not, if it fits Class 3: behind the front wall, no more than 30 m² for all garden structures together, 25 m² of garden left, and no higher than 3 m (4 m with a tiled or slated pitched roof) (S.I. 338 of 2026). See planning permission.

What's the difference between a pergola and a gazebo?

A pergola is posts and beams with an open or louvred top, often against the house. A gazebo is a freestanding shelter with a solid roof. See pergola or gazebo.

What is a bioclimatic pergola?

A pergola whose roof is made of aluminium blades that tilt open for sun and air and close against rain. Louvered and bioclimatic mean much the same. See louvered pergolas.

Wood or aluminium?

Timber costs least and looks softer but needs treating. Aluminium doesn't rot or need painting and is what most louvred roofs are made of. See wooden and aluminium.

Are you a pergola company?

No. Pergola Builders is an introduction service run by Bartlomiej Standa, trading as Elevate Ireland. We pass your request to one pergola company that covers your county. They measure up, price it in writing and deal with you directly.
